Credit Recovery
Falling behind on credits is more common than most families realize, and it doesn’t mean a student can’t graduate. Credit recovery gives students a way to make up the courses they missed or didn’t pass so they can get back on track for a high school diploma. At Quaker Digital Academy (QDA), a tuition-free Ohio online school serving students statewide since 2003, that work happens online, with support from teachers and counselors.
What is credit recovery?
Credit recovery is a way for a student to earn credit for a course they previously attempted but did not complete or pass. Instead of repeating an entire school year, the student focuses on the courses they still need. Credit recovery is different from taking a course for the first time, and it is not a shortcut around learning the material. Students still complete coursework and show what they know.
Who is credit recovery for?
Some common situations include:
- Students who failed one or more courses at their previous school
- Students who missed significant school time because of illness, injury or family circumstances
- Students who struggled with anxiety, bullying or a school environment that wasn’t working for them
- Students who moved or changed schools and lost credits along the way
- Students who are working or caring for family members and need a flexible schedule
- Older students who want to finish what they started and earn a diploma
Whatever the reason, the goal is the same: a clear plan to finish.
How credit recovery works at QDA
- Review of your transcript. When a student enrolls, QDA staff look at the credits already earned and the courses still needed for graduation. Families can send transcripts from the previous school to speed this up.
- A plan built around the student. A school counselor helps map out which courses to take and in what order, based on what the student needs to graduate.
- Online coursework. Students complete their courses online, from home or anywhere with an internet connection. QDA provides a computer and internet reimbursement, so access to technology shouldn’t be a barrier.
- Teacher support along the way. Students aren’t left to figure it out alone. Teachers and support staff are available when students have questions, and tutoring is available for students who need extra help.
- Progress toward graduation. As courses are completed, credits are added to the student’s record, so families can see the path to a diploma getting shorter.
Why an online school works well for credit recovery
An online school can help because:
- Flexibility. Students can learn from anywhere, which helps those with health issues, work schedules or family responsibilities.
- A fresh start. A new school can mean a clean slate, away from the pressures or situations that caused the student to fall behind.
- Focused work. Students concentrate on the courses they actually need instead of sitting through classes they’ve already passed.
- Individual attention. Support is tailored to each student rather than a one-size-fits-all pace.
Is it free?
Yes. QDA is a tuition-free public online school, so enrolling and taking courses doesn’t cost families tuition.
Will I still be able to graduate with a diploma?
Yes. Students who complete Ohio’s graduation requirements earn a diploma from QDA, an accredited Ohio public school. Ohio sets statewide requirements for credits and other graduation measures. You can see what QDA requires on our graduation requirements page, and a counselor can explain exactly what a particular student still needs.
What if I want to finish early?
Some students not only catch up but get ahead. Depending on how many credits a student needs and how much time they can commit, finishing sooner may be possible. Ask a counselor about options for graduating early.
